How do the Maksutovs compare to Refractors of the same size?

Aside from greater portability are there any other benefits to a Maksutov?

As the year goes on different subjects become available.

Have you taken a look oround the Orion constellation or along the centre line of Cygnus? There's quite a bit to look at there and different nights will reveal different views! 8)

I can remember learning about the planets and the solar system at school (just!) and what I was taught was set in stone! OK so nobody can undo what we were taught years ago but what are children taught in schools today? Are they aware that what we know about space today can be revised and turned aro...

Thanks Ian. I was thinking of upping the budget a bit & going for the 102mm refractor! What I want to do is general observations and astrophotography. I have a friend with a 200mm x 1000mm reflector and although quite high magnifications, the images he sees through it lack contrast & colour. Targets...

If you had to choose between the two would you go for the refractor or the reflector?

I may up the budget a bit since I've received more cheques this morning!

What am I looking for?

I'm hoping to get a new telescope in the next couple of weeks and have a few options I may be interested in. My criteria is that it has to be portable, around £200 and OK for astrophotography. So far I've come up with a Skywatcher Startravel 80 EQ1 (80mm refractor)+ extra for a motor drive and a Sk...

So depressed about not managing to see or capture the Eclipse I've resorted to Photoshop therapy and cleaned up a few astrophotographs.

What was Jeffs message?

All I got was "The topic or post you requested does not exist"

Did the same thing happen to the website or was it just too many people accessing it at the same time?

A lot of my observing goes as follows:-

11:45. Quick peek in garden. Sky beautifully clear, horizon to horizon. Myriads of pinpoint stars. Milky Way showing bright and clear.

11:46 Throw blanket down in the garden, lie on back & enjoy the view!
