A mucky orange sky and a red Sun over West Yorkshire today. I started projecting the Sun after 1300 UT but the pale orange image was too dim at x60 in my 80mm refractor. By 1330 I could just get a focussed orange disc of 30mm diameter with x23. By 1345 the dusty veil had thinned sufficiently to get a 100mm projection, yellow and rippling at x60. No spots but was like watching a stage light change and brighten. Light show. Anyone get any pics? Bob

Orange sky here also, Bob, and very peculiar cloud colours.
The 'security' lights on due to low light level.

Is this due to wildfires in Portugal?

It was warm midday, about 22C.

So far not raining fish or frogs, but maybe later.

Regards,
David

Yes David, apparently there is a mixture of Saharan type dust and some of the Spain/Portugal fire products in it. Last time I saw anything like this was an orange wind that blew in over Limassol in Cyprus when I was there many years ago. Some people are reporting funny smells on aircraft! Bob

Yes, a tangerine Sun at mid-day! We are having a warm Caribbean gale in the North West with dry Autumn leaves rustling like tinsel.
This morning, the air was an errie pallid yellow, as if something strange was about to occur; very atmospheric. Maybe it was Voodoo magic... .

I saw this at work, and realized high altitude dust was the cause.
It was for somebody as experienced as I am. Very UN-nerving.

We had the same orange sun and yellow cloud here in Galloway. It looked like the coming of the apocalypse.

Weird Weather : Monday 16th October: Sussex Coast:
Before midday, the weather was very warm, so I did a bit of gardening, and then sat outside to eat my lunch until the sky clouded over. By mid-afternoon, the sky seemed very threatening and even almost greenish in colour. Flocks of Herring Gulls were setting out for the coast as if it was evening-time. We expected a torrential thunderstorm but nothing of the kind happened. It just became darker and darker, although the landscape outside looked unusually sharp and clear, indoors we had to switch on the lights to read or write. It was really atmospheric and lasted until just before sunset, when a very pale red Sun was seen and then was gone. By then we had heard that it was Saharan sand combined with Iberian forest-fire ash, being dragged north by the remains of Hurricane Ophelia. regards maf
