Just before dawn, Saturday morning, has good view of the Gibbous Moon near the outskirts of the Hyades, with the Sun setting over Mare Crisium with just a bit of the mare surface remaining in sunlight. The old story about the so-called "lunar bridge" reported to be there but not so, came to mind. I recall mentioning it during the a talk to the Science Society at school way way back...the bridge and the domes! At least the comes did exist! Regards maf.

Was it Percy Wilkins who saw the "bridge" feature, when he was drawing up his 300-inch Moon map in collaboration with Patrick Moore?

I believe that the "bridge" was originally pointed out by an (American ?) astronomer called O'Neill, and Percy Wilkins, then director of the BAA Lunar Section, confirmed its existence but erroneously so. I have a feeling that it was announced too soon and Percy Wilkins took a lot of stick about it. I did have a copy of "The Moon" by Wilkins & Moore, which contained Wilkins' Moon-map, although I found it hard to use as it was so crowded with fine detail that it was almost impossible to locate some large craters in amongst the detail. Regards maf

Yes, just Google "O'Neills Bridge" for about 117,000 hits :D
