Old crescent Moon + Venus

Post by mike a feist »

Monday: 1/7/19; almost overslept! Rushed to the Foredown Ridge getting there at 0430 BST. The sky was clear with slight murkiness near the eastern horizon and the "Shadow of the Earth" with the reddish "Belt of Venus" noticed in the west at 0434 BST. Used 8x36 Monarch binocular to locate the very thin crescent Moon (< a fov above the eastern hills) and Venus (< half a fov up). These objects did not fit a single fov and neither was seen with the unaided eye as the sky was too bright. The Lunar Crescent appeared incomplete. By 0440 BST the distances above the horizon had increased to one fov for the Moon and half a fov for Venus. I followed them both until the Moon was lost and continued observing Venus, noting it at 0452 , 0454, 0456, 0459, 0500 and finally 0501+ BST, just moments before the Sun arose at 0503 BST, and I desisted for safety sake. Regards maf
