Betelgeuse is maybe the faintest it has been in fifty years.

I make it about magnitude 1.6.

I wonder if it is about to go pop. :(

The equation of time may be also zero today.

Hello David, I am not confident in my earlier estimate, so I made a separate estimate using gamma, Bellatrix (which is much closer to alpha and at a similar altitude) and my revised estimate is Bellatrix +3 = 1.34. So I think Betelgeuse is about mag 1.3 to 1.4, but we are still quite close in our overall results. Betelgeuse may simply be going through a period of greater variability, like that which drew it to John Herschel’s attention in the 1830s. Kind regards, Bob

Hello, did a quick estimate last night (about 1145 am Ut on 3 Jan) from Townsville, Queensland, Aus, where there is less light pollution than Melbourne. Betelgeuse seemed to be mag 1.24 by step comparison with gamma Ori. Anyone else made any estimates?

2020 Jan 13, 1050 UT. Townsville, QLD. Betelgeuse estimated at mag 1.4 by comparison with gamma Ori, Bellatrix.

I compared Betelgeuse with Aldebaran last night, and it was noticeably dimmer. I agree, Bob, it is now about the same as Bellatrix.

2020 Jan 18 at 0937 UT, Townsville QLD, deep twilight. Just made a NE estimate of Betelgeuse by comparison with gamma, Bellatrix, the constellation has just become visible in the evening sky and the colour of alpha is not so very obvious. The estimate is one or possibly two steps (Pogsons) brighter than Bellatrix, which makes Betelgeuse 1.4 to 1.5 visual magnitude.

Betelgeuse is now a smidgin fainter than 1.5 visual magnitude, according to Guinean and Wasatonic. This would make the star comparable to Adhara in Canis Major. I haven’t made any more observations here since Jan 18, due to tropical storms and cloud. Regards, Bob

2020 Feb 02, 1045 UT. Clear dark sky, half Moon blocked out of field of view, Orion at a high altitude. Betelgeuse estimated at visual magnitude 1.54 by comparison with gamma, Bellatrix. Pogson step comparison, gamma + 1. Gamma taken as mag 1.64. Regards, Bob

Last year, Betelgeuse was the 10th brightest star in the sky, but now it's the 24th: http://www.spaceweather.com . It's reckoned that if, at its distance of 600 light years, the supergiant went supernova, it would be as bright as a gibbous Moon. That would make it visible in daylight.

2020 Feb 12, 1012 UT. Townsville QLD. Sky dark. Betelgeuse observed with the unaided eye. Estimated brightness by Pogson Step Method: Bellatrix (gamma Ori) + 1. Taking Gamma as Vmag 1.64, Betelgeuse is Vmag 1.54 now.

Betelgeuse is the same brightness as gamma, Bellatrix = Vmag 1.64.

2020 Feb 24, 2110 UT. New Farnley, West Yorkshire, UK. Unaided eye, sky dark with artificial light sources shielded. Variable well seen at a reasonable altitude.
Light estimate: Gamma (Bellatrix, Vmag 1.64) +1 (Pogson Step Method). Deduced Vmag Betelgeuse is 1.54.
By my estimate Betelgeuse has visibly brightened by 0.1 mag since 2020 Feb 14 (see above). Anyone concur or disagree?
