First time seen this year because of poor sky and buildings.

2020 January 12 17.20UT.

8x32 binocular and hand held 20x50 scope.

Brilliant Venus magnitude minus 4 and star, perhaps magnitude 4, half degree to the left of Venus seen easily in both instruments.
I don't know what the star is. Both objects white.

Sky not dark.
Very transparent after high winds and racing large cumulus clouds.

Regards,
David

Thank you Brian.

I am surprised I saw the star so easily with severe light pollution and a light sky.
It must have been very transparent after the windy day.
Probably the clearest sky in a long time.
Venus was brilliant.

A friend was in the Cape Verde islands and was startled at this bright object, which I assumed must be Venus.
She sent a photo showing basically a large sand castle, which must be the hotel? And more sand.
With a bright star.
Phone cameras are really good.

I think Venus got quite high as the planets must rise steeply near the equator.
I have never been that near the equator.

She said the only animals were cats.

On the last night the sky in the Cape Verde islands was very clear.
No lights and many stars.

Today was cloudy here.

Regards,
David

Hello David,
I too noticed this star with 1/6th of the fov of Venus using 15x65 spotter on a tripod, 10/01/MMXX between 1745 and 1750 UT.

[note, having acquired a different computer I have a different e-mail account. I have therefore re-registered here. I seemed unable to post here under the old one and could not use my old name either!) regards maf

That seems odd, Mike. I don't think the Forum software even uses an email address to sign-in. You should be able to login from any computer (+ tablet, phone). You can change your email under "User Control Panel" then "edit account settings" though.

Regards,

Brian, I did not know that, but never mind. Since I set-up the new computer [with my wife's assistance] I was unable to register and therefore was unable to post messages even when I solved the puzzle having made too many attempts. I really am pretty poor at computerology! In fact this is the second time that I done this over the years, and I believe someone did explained that to me then but that was so long ago I had forgotten. regard maf
