Stellarium HIP

Post by snowdon »

I am still a newbie to astronomny and I have only just acquired Stellarium and I am very impressed. However, I keep getting 'HIP' references when I click at various points on the screen - can anyone tell me what a'HIP' is please? E.g HIP 5146, HIP 16182. Thanks

Hi there,
I think these are stars from the Hipparcus star catalogue.

I can't remember if this extensive list was formed using space based positions which were more accurate than previous positions measured say by Carlsberg type transit instruments on La Palma.

Someone will no doubt enlighten us further.

Regards, David

Thanks Gents, 'Hipparcos' answers the question. If only all puzzles were so easy to solve! Thanks!
