The black hole and the gas cloud

Post by brian livesey »

In March, astrophysicists were looking forward to witnessing our galaxy's supermassive black hole drawing in a giant galactic dust cloud, known as G2, but nature thwarted their expectations, as the cloud escaped unscathed.
A team of astronomers at the University of California, Los Angeles, who have been monitoring the cloud, have discovered a very massive star, a merged binary pulled together by the black hole, inside the cloud.
The star's gravitational hold on the cloud prevented the cloud from being drawn into the black hole. It will be another 300 years before G2 returns to the closest point in its orbit around the black hole.
