The ghostly galaxy

Post by brian livesey »

Astronomers have discovered a large galaxy that's made almost entirely of dark matter. The galaxy, named Dragonfly 44, is fairly nearby in cosmic terms, but so faint that it's only now been detected.
The galaxy has about the same mass as the Milky Way, but a mere one hundredth of one per cent is visible matter as stars and gas. The discovery was made at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii. Team member, Professor Pieter van Dokkum from Yale University said: "They [ the stars ] don't care what form the matter is, they just tell you that it's there."
Dark matter is thought to make up 27 per cent of the universe.
