Genesis of the Moon

Post by brian livesey »

Scientists in America appear to have confirmed the theory that the Moon had its origin when a space body collided with the Earth, vapourising both bodies and mixing them together to form a cloud five hundred times bigger than today's Earth. As the vapour cloud cooled, the Moon eventually crystallised out of it.
This is the conclusion of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis: "Our results provide the first evidence that the impact really did [ largely] vaporise Earth. The thorough mixing of this atmosphere explains the identical isotope composition of the Earth and Moon", said assistant professor Kun Wang.
Dr. Wang's team used a new technique to analyse tiny differences between the potassium contained in terrestrial and lunar rock that had been undetectable The heavier potassium in the lunar rock fell out of the vapour before condensing to form the Moon.
