An accelerating Universe

Post by brian livesey »

The Hubble Constant that gives the rate of universal expansion has been revised from 41.6 miles per sec per megaparsec to 44.7 miles per sec per megaparsec - one megaparsec is just over 3 million light years.
The difference has significant implications for astronomy, according to the research team led by Sheery Suyu of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany and Frederic Courbin at Lausanne Polytechnic in Switzerland."An accurate measurement of the Hubble Constant is one of the most sought-after prizes in cosmological research today," said Vivien Bonvin, also at the Polytechnic. "It is crucial for modern astronomy as it can help to confirm or refute whether our picture of the Universe - composed of dark energy, dark matter and normal matter - is correct."
Astrophysicists used the technique of gravitational lensing and studied three galaxies that are bending light from a more distant quasar whose light fluctuates randomly. Multiple images of the quasar were produced by the intervening galaxies. The light arrives at different times, depending on the route, allowing researchers to measure the Hubble Constant. The results of the research are available in the "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society".

Dear Brian
I was just thinking - If our Universe is infinite in size can it expand ?
Best wishes from Cliff

Isn't it the case Cliff that the Universe is finite and unbounded?

Dear Brian
My universe, Sorry UNIVERSE, is actually bounded but INFINITE. But possibly even a bit bigger.
Best wishes from Cliff
PS the universe is bounded by a dry stone wall (gritstone with un-mortared joints) so relative easy to keep re-building allowing the universe to get even bigger.
