Solar minimum increasing cosmic radiation

Post by brian livesey »

For PST and other solar observers, our star is behaving pretty uneventfully at the present time, as a dearth of sunspots and prominences shows.
Monitoring of the current solar minimum has, however, revealed significant and ongoing increases in the amount of X-rays and gamma-rays that are penetrating the Sun's weakened magnetic field and solar wind pressure.
The increase in cosmic radiation poses a greater exposure risk to astronauts and air-travellers in particular. Cosmic radiation can also affect weather. Ions in the atmosphere can encourage the growth of condensation nuclei, increasing cloud cover.
