Einstein's general theory of relativity predicts that the light from a star passing through the gravitational field of a black hole will be stretched to the red end of the spectrum: an effect known as the red shift.
Astrophysicists at the Max Planck Institute for Extra-terrestrial Physics have witnessed such an event. "This was the first time we could test directly Einstein's general theory of relativity near a supermassive black hole," said Frank Eisenhauer, senior astronomer at the Institute. "At the time of Einstein, he could not think or dream of what we are showing today."
It's truly remarkable how much has been achieved in astrophysics during the twentieth century and into the present one - thanks to improvements in instrumentation, including space telescopes, adaptive optics, computers and digital imagining techniques, etc.
