Fast Radio Bursts from space were first discovered in 2007. The origin of the bursts is not known, but they are considered to be emanating from cosmological distances.
FRBs are millisecond-long flashes of radio waves and may be generated by black holes or super-dense neutron stars. A more outlandish theory is that they might be generated by very advanced
extraterrestrials. This has been suggested by Professor Avi Loeb at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, as some of the radio bursts are repeating.
Last year, over a period of three weeks, a Canadian-led team of astrophysicists, using a new type of radio telescope, detected 13 of the radio flashes, which are considered to be coming from billions of light years away.
"With more repeaters to study, we might be able to understand these puzzles - where they are from and what causes them," said Dr. Ingrid Stairs, an astrophysicist at the University of British Columbia.
