What seems surprising Jeff is that the phenomenon is a recent discovery. Maybe researchers mistook it for aurora. Superficially, it does bear a resemblance to auroral displays.

Yes, it’s easy to see why STEVE might be confused with auroral displays. I love the description of the purple glow being caused by “hot (3000 degrees C) rivers of gas flowing through the Earth’s magnetosphere faster than 13,000 miles per hour”. It’s quite mind boggling to try and imagine.
