Bugs in space

Post by brian livesey »

Nasa researchers have discovered that latent viruses that astronauts take into space on them, show an increase in shedding and reactivation.
Sample testing of blood, urine and saliva taken from astronauts during and after spaceflights,
showed the reactivation of herpes, chickenpox and shingles, although most of the astronauts didn't show symptoms of these viral diseases. "Only six astronauts developed any symptoms due to viral reaction," said lead researcher Satish Mehta.
The reactivation of the herpes virus and the possibility of infecting others, is causing concern for long-term Mars missions.
The research is published in the journal "Frontiers in Microbiology".
