Earth Hour

Post by Paul Sutherland »

Interesting to see that Earth Hour will see so many lights switched off around the world as an alert/protest over climate change. Of course it is a short-lived and token thing, but perhaps astronomers could harness the mood and energy of this campaign.

I think it was an interesting event, but perhaps nothing more. Here we are less than a week afterward, and what has been the effect? I’m sure if you go to any of those cities tonight, you will see the lights back on. And that’s the problem.

Perhaps next year, they should be looking for cities to turn the lights off, and keep them off.
