Night-owl Robins

Post by brian livesey »

At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. David Dominone said that, due to city lights, robins are singing through the night because of disruption to their body clocks.
The robins seem to be most affected by blue light from neon signs. I've noticed here that the plaintive song of the robin can be heard at night occasionally, and also before dawn breaks. The Dunnock ( misnamed the Hedge Sparrow, as it isn't a finch ) can also break into song in the middle of the night, but this is a natural trait of the bird.
So far, I haven't heard a robin whistle Cole Porter's "Night and Day", but we never know.
