Atacama Desert glow ...

Post by brian livesey »

A BBC TV news item this evening, concerning light pollution encroaching on astronomical observations at the world renown Atacama Desert observatories, said that the Chilean government is taking steps to halt the spread of light pollution there.
Some companies have already been prosecuted for lighting offences, but the biggest offender is the the city of San Pedro ( population 12,000 ). The city is expanding rapidly, with new office blocks, high rise flats, shopping malls and new roads - all brightly illuminated.
The news report said that almost half of the world's astronomical observatories ( including the Very Large Telescope ) are sited in Chile.
