Worcester Skybeam - call to action.

Post by nightcal »

Nightmare - we now have a sky beam in Worcester! Bushwackers wine bar/night club have installed a bright moving searchlight on top of their building and it's wrecking amateur astronomy in the city and the surrounding countryside.

I understand that Worcester City Council planning department have already determined that this beam constitutes an advertisement and hence will need Consent. I urge you all to contact the council’s planning department to let you’re feelings be known about this intrusion in to the night sky. It would also useful if you contacted the local MP Mike Foster. If enough people object, any application to continue using this sky beam will hopefully be rejected.

I'm not sure a direct approach would be the best strategy. It could be quite easy to put someone back up and make them stubborn. I would, certainly recommend that if you do contact them directly that you non-confrontational stance.

Worcester skybeam - VICTORY!

Post by nightcal »

Worcester City Council have come up trumps. They have told the owners of Bushwackers that they must cease using the sky beam as it constitutes an advertisement. They have also said that the beam would not get advertsiing consent as it is on a listed building and in the city's conservation area.

EXCELLENT!

That's great news.

It's of interest that the Council decided against Bushwackers on the grounds of 'illegal advertising' rather than being a confounded nuisance. Presumably establishments not in a listed building and just outside the city's conservation area can still flood-light the night sky with impunity? It may simply be that 'advertising' was the most expedient way for the Council to nobble it of course.

Will someone now e-mail Bushwackers head office highlighting objections from an astronomical perspective? They may just relocate the blasted thing to a Bushwackers elsewhere
