Any dark sites near Salisbury?

Post by LWC »

Anyone know of a good dark site near Salisbury? Even in the middle of the New Forest I can still see the glow from Southampton, Bournemouth and Salisbury.

Church farm camping park at Sixpenny Handley is excellent , very quiet, good views and best of all dark, well worth a visit for a weekend http://www.churchfarmcandcpark.co.uk :D .

A year or two back I went to a star party held about 4 miles from Salisbury and was pleasantly surprised that it was actually quite dark (it didn't matter that the north was a little light polluted).

I was surprised at just how obvious Southampton was though - for about 30 degrees of the horizon up to about 30 degrees in altitude there was a bright glow. I haven't been there but Sixpenny Handley should be darker than the place I was at.

6dH probably is quite darl Martin down would be.

I just had a call from my lodcal council re the pollution from a yellow sodium lamp that streams into my garden as if it were placed there deliberatly. They tell me that unless there are a certain number of Lux coming through tightly closed curtains, after 11pm, they (therefore I) can do nothing.

I am considering spray painting my side of it late one night! An air rifle pellet could land me in a lot of poo!

Only if they can PROVE it was you. Suspecting is not enough.

OK, with my admin hat off, I think the council are being unreasonable and I suggest you might ask the Campaign for Dark Skies for advice on how to pursue the matter.
