New Moon 12 December 2023 at 23h32m UT

The next new moon occurs on 2023 December 12 at 23:32 UT/GMT. The time of New moon quoted here refers to the instant of conjunction of the Moon with the Sun and not to the time when the crescent moon is likely to become visible to the naked eye. The crescent moon should become visible to the naked ...

Re: More solar shots

Wow, I love the one of the prominence on the limb, or is it classed as a flare?

Spectacular. Thanks for posting these wonderful images.

Best wishes, Jeff.

Re: Cornwall to switch off half of street lights

This is very encouraging. It's good to see representatives acknowledging the impact of lighting on wildlife too, although the primary driver is saving money - not that this is a bad thing in it's own right. If we had limitless free energy then the world would be lit like Blackpool illuminations perm...

Cheers Bob - it was truly fascinating. Nigel - I thought I could detect the GRS, but I wasn't certain. Thanks again for the prompt. Glad you got to see it too. I liked your reference to how tiny the dot began to appear - I forgot to mention this. It was incredible moving from that is it/isn't it pha...

Keep an eye on that Croc, too, Bob

It's always good to hear your southern sky observing. Look forward to hearing more.

Re: Events Tonight - Ganymede & Comet 12P/Pons Brookes

Well, this was an incredible event to observe, Nigel, and a first for me. I actually started observing just before 7pm, which is when the attached sketch was made. Ganymede was clearly visible with a fraction of a separation from the Jovian disk. I watched on and off until 7:45pm, after which I mana...

This is really fascinating to see. How lucky we are to be able to be able to take a glimpse at these events. The intensity of it looks immense.

Thanks for taking the time to post the link.

Re: Jupiter and Galilean Moons 1 Dec 2023

Thanks Nigel, I might try and have a go at the inverse style of sketching that the author of the S&T article used, which I referred to. I think my poor seeing was more from my observation location on the front doorstep, with Jupiter directly above the roof of a tall nearby house, which I suspect...

Jupiter and Galilean Moons 1 Dec 2023

How lovely to see clear skies this evening, with a very crispy and frosty night underfoot. The temperature was at -3 degrees Celsius here in North Staffs. I decided to set up my 90mm refractor right on the front doorstep to observe Jupiter. Using a 12.4mm eyepiece (80x), I had a very pleasing view o...

Really beautiful, David. Love the subtle colours and the slight hints of blue around the main equatorial zones. Well captured.
