I think I've a recollection of trying and failing with my 200mm Skywatcher, now I come to think of it, but that would have been from heavily light polluted skies.

Moon-Jupiter 15 Oct 2021

The Moon and Jupiter are in relative close apparent proximity this evening. Jupiter is some 6.5 degrees to the upper right of the Moon. I've caught brief glimpses of the two, but we have some extensive patchy cloud cover this evening, which is spoiling the view somewhat. I hope others have had bette...

Re: Three Comets Near Auriga

Nigel, what a worthwhile observing session. The view through your 350P Dobsonian must be be very impressive. Is that aperture enough to detect Pluto, just out of interest? Probably a challenging target at best at the moment, setting well before Saturn I think. Spotting comets is very exciting, irres...

Re: Forthcoming - Moon & Venus Saturday 9th Oct 2021

I saw the crescent at 1625BST, viewed from the seafront at Rhyl. I spotted it using an 8x23 binocular initially, but it was visible to the unaided eye. I couldn't detect Venus, but I wasn't looking for long enough. I was a bit frustrated by the amount of thin haze over parts of the sky where the Moo...

Very nice. You got to see them both, that’s the important thing.

Re: Counting sunspots

There are some interesting articles on this. I must confess, I wouldn't know where to start. It seems dependent upon magnification and definition/granularity to me. I see three groups in this image, one simple and two complex, in which I'd struggle to count the individual spots within. Do I group wh...

Total cloud cover here, Mike. Well done on observing the Moon and Venus under such challenging conditions.

Re: Waning Crescent - Monday 4 Oct 2021

Picked out the beautiful lunar crescent for a minute this morning at breakfast (0617 BST) 4th October, with bright Earthshine... I wasn't early enough to detect the Earthshine, but it's always so beautiful to see when it occurs. I've just observed again at 0955 BST, and it's quite challenging in an...
