Could Mars One Ever Work?

Post by G Burt »

Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about the feasibility of the Mars One venture?

I can understand that some sort of dreadful reality TV 'Big Brother In Space', following the trials and tribulations of would-be astronauts in training, might appeal to the viewing masses. But could an actual private venture mission to Mars ever become a reality?

History shows us that exploration has always been driven by political and/or economic ambitions and is government instigated and led. Then private enterprise can follow where suitable opportunities arise.

Branson and Rutan's SpaceShipTwo will be capable of giving weightless joy-rides in a near-space environment but will not even achieve orbit. Getting into orbit is a much greater challenge, let alone going beyond orbit to the Moon or even Mars.

Mars One seems to be taking itself seriously but can it ever really get a crew of would-be astronauts to Mars, who are then willing to maroon themselves there for good? Can't see it happening folks.

Best Wishes,

Geoff :)

Is the game worth the candle in terms of the sheer amount of labour and resources needed to get to Mars?
Surely, there are far more interesting and urgent projects to consider. For example, providing a shield against earth-threatening asteroids and meteorites, and launching more space telescopes sophisticated enough to image exoplanets in detail, etc.
One way ego-trippers to Mars could possibly go mad after a long period of separation from Earth.

Mars One plans for colonization are unbelievable to be implemented and even if they could be I can't even imagine what the budget has to be. Some of the candidates for colonization said that the project expected them to invest their own money in Mars One. Mars One found a new investor. How much should he invest in a project to bring it to life? Considering that there is no spacecraft or home for life on Mars, he has to invest billions of dollars. Maybe if the project will collaborate with other companies that aim to implement a similar mission like SpaceX, then the mission could succeed.

Yes, at least now we only can imagine how it would be. Personally I like the way Kim Stanley Robinson describes it in his Mars trilogy. Definetely, it is worth reading

I think that Mars-One is the one of most promising projects. Anyway, there's so much things to keep in mind. Radiation, thinner atmosphere and there's no magnetic shield so humans on the planet’s surface would be at risk of exposure to solar and cosmic radiation. One solution would be for humans to use that dust to protect themselves, lining shelters with sandbags filled with Martian soil that could block out radiation. But for the past year NASA has been supporting research into growing snow algae, a type that’s common in the Nevada desert and other high-altitude, low-nutrient environments on Earth, in conditions similar of Mars. Growing algae in such conditions could not only create a source of food but also produce oxygen. So I think that Mars-One is more than possible project.

The spaceship was not sleeping for 50 years. Today engineering is mature, tested with numerous designs and flights. So that we can plan realistic and bald missions, including sending numerous facilities in short timelines without unnecessary too much of reinsurance and redundancy.
The management of projects with confidence and effective decision making, leveraging all the risks is for the space missions for sure. They should be fast and secure.
Following private companies shows them mature, fast and steadily developing, having grasp of the cutting edge technologies and successful launches.
Mars-One has the features of concept, technology, ability and feasibility and a clear plan. A mission wouldn’t be announced or discussed if it wouldn’t have passed all the scenarios, engineering solutions and numerous tests.

Absolutely agree. Laving people on the other planet without a possibility of turning back it's at least must have a good reason. Many volunteers are ready to die on Mars for this project. Not even mentioning how much money was spent on it. This game is woth it candles.
