Dart mission

Post by brian livesey »

The threat of a future asteroid strike on our planet has spurred the development of Nasa’s Dart rocket ( Double Asteroid Redirection Test ). Launch of Dart is set for next month and it’s mission is to chase down the 160m asteroid Dimorphos that orbits the larger asteroid Didymos.
Dimorphos poses no threat to Earth, but NASA wants to collide its rocket with the asteroid to measure the physical effects of the collision.
“Dart is a first step in testing methods for hazardous asteroid deflection,” said Andrea Riley of NASA.”Potentially hazard asteroids are a global concern.” The Dart collision, impacting at 15,000mph, is expected to produce a sizeable crater that can be mapped to develop impact models for future asteroid deflection missions.
