DART mission to asteroid Dimorphos

Post by brian livesey »

Tomorrow should see the launch of the asteroid impactor, DART, to attempt to deflect Didymos’s moonlet asteroid, Dimorphos. The craft should arrive at the binary asteroid in September, 2022.
DART carries an Italian cubesat that will position itself to monitor the impact, including imaging the results. The experiment is the first to attempt to deflect an asteroid with the aim of deflecting future Earth-threatening asteroids.
For the time being, we can only wonder what effect an experimental impactor might have on a comet with regard to deflection, as they too can collide with Earth and cause profound changes to our planet.
