Old Saturn sketch
Digging back through my observing log, here's a sketch of Saturn done on New Years Day 2002 with my old 4 inch achromatic. The Crepe Ring is much exaggerated and seen only in glimpses with averted vision. Bob

Excellent observation, Bob.
I haven't seen the Crepe ring with such a small aperture.
I usually used a 12.5 inch Dall Kirkham.
Also maybe you show Encke's division?
I did see Enceladus with a 6 inch Maksutov from my town balcony at 95x.
Regards,
David

Re: Old Saturn sketch
Lovely detail. Is it a pencil crayon sketch, Bob, or pastel, as it has colour in it?
Best wishes, Jeff.

Re: Old Saturn sketch
Hello and thanks. Its pencil and chalk. The colours are emphasised because its impossible to render them accurately - so delicate really. I didnt see Encke's division, but the outer part of Ring A was white, while inwards it was a bluish tone, and that faint contrast might give a false impression of a division such as Encke's. The north hemisphere looked bluish also and the SEB southwards was a yellowy orange, shading to grey towards the pole. The Crepe Ring really was difficult - repeated glimpses with averted vision, most strongly at the ansae but it could just be made out across the globe.
