Suiting up for the Moon

Post by brian livesey »

This week NASA unveiled its new prototype, unisex, lunar spacesuits at the Johnson Space Centre. The suits are less bulky and more flexible than the restrictive Apollo suits.
According to NASA the suits have 16 layers and can take some hours to put on while each part of the equipment is scrupulously checked.
As with the Apollo suits, the new Axiom suits will be white to reflect the intense sunlight and protect the astronauts from extreme heat and cold. The suits have advanced life-support systems, pressure garments and avionics. A single spacesuit costs millions of dollars.
Artemis 11, which may be launched as early as next year, will have four astronauts onboard the new Orion spacecraft, which will orbit the moon.
