Two Suns appear in the sky - video

Post by Brian »

"A cyclist filmed a fascinating sight in the early hours of the morning in the Chengdu, China, earlier this week. The streets were bathed in a warm yellow light emanating from two suns. An atmospheric optical illusion is likely believed to be the cause of the extraordinary phenomenon."

Apologies for the long link and extra items which I was unable to edit out:

Fascinating Brian, there are obviously weird atmospheric conditions over the city - caused by dust???? Bob

Actually on looking at the footage again the lower "Sun" is an internal reflection in the cam lens because when the Sun passes behind the power lines they dont pass in front of the lower Sun image and then there is a delay before they appear against the internal reflection as the power lines pass in front of the upper image. Maybe the cyclist was having a jape, because he cannot have seen two Suns except when he was looking at the phone screen.

Bob,
Yes, I did wonder myself if the lower image was just an internal reflection. Seems that it could well be False alarm then :?

Thanks Bob for the explanation.

I took photos of the Moon last evening and the real Moon was overexposed but the nearby reflection from the window glass was correctly exposed and yellow, as it was to the unaided eyes low in the smog.

I have many such photos of false Moons and I once discovered a comet that was a distant ghost of Jupiter. I had to go six miles to fetch my 20x80 binocular to realise my error.

The event where I saw equally bight Suns was in my all sky halo observation, which had so many rare forms I lost count.
But the two Suns were 22 degree apart horizontally.
Buildings hid the likely third Sun.

There are rare elliptical halos but the smallest is about 6 or 8 degrees in size.

Regards,
David

I think it's the camera, its not in the sky. If you see it goes in front of the wire very early on the video happened to me once with the moon had 2 moons in the sky but one was on the camera which I didn't see until I reviewed it
